The Turing Scheme — The Big One
What is it?
The Turing Scheme is the UK government's flagship international education programme, replacing Erasmus+ after Brexit. It funds international work placements, study exchanges, and volunteering for students and apprentices at UK institutions. The funding is non-repayable — it's a grant, not a loan.
Who can apply?
- Students at UK higher education institutions (universities)
- Apprentices at UK further education colleges
- UK-domiciled (living in the UK prior to study)
- Your institution must be a registered Turing Scheme provider
How much can you get?
- Amounts vary by destination and duration (further destinations get more)
- Typically £150–£500/month for living costs plus a travel grant
- Students from disadvantaged backgrounds get additional top-ups
- For a 6-month placement in Europe, expect £1,500–£3,000 total
How do you apply?
You cannot apply directly to the Turing Scheme. Applications go through your university or college. Contact your:
- International office or study abroad team
- Placement year or work experience office
- Your department's international coordinator
We provide all the documentation your university needs: learning agreements, internship confirmations, supervisor details, and mid/end-of-placement reports.
University Scholarships
Most UK universities with strong international programmes have their own scholarship funds for students going on placements. These are often under-advertised and under-applied-for.
Where to look
- Your university's international office website
- Departmental scholarship pages
- Student Union international travel funds
- Alumni foundation travel grants
Typical amounts
- £500–£2,000 one-off grants
- Often stackable with Turing Scheme
- Application deadlines vary — apply early
- Some require an essay or interview
Other Funding Sources
British Council Study UK
Offers various programmes and small grants for international educational experiences. Worth checking britishcouncil.org for current opportunities.
Sector-Specific Grants
Some professional bodies and industries offer grants for students gaining international experience — e.g. Chartered Institute of Marketing, engineering bodies, arts councils. Check your sector's relevant organisations.
Student Maintenance Loan Abroad
UK students studying or working abroad as part of their degree typically receive a higher maintenance loan rate. Check Student Finance England (or relevant devolved body) for your entitlement — placements abroad often attract a larger loan than studying in the UK.
